GREAT WHITE SHARKS AND HUMANS FACE OFF ON THE CALIFORNIA COAST IN ‘SHARK BATTLEGROUND’ PREMIERING SATURDAY, JUNE 9TH AT 9PM ET/PT ON NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – May 21, 2007 – It happens right here in Northern California. More Great White Shark attacks than anywhere else in the world.  Stretching from Monterey Bay to Bodega Bay then out to the Farallon Islands, this treacherous region is know as the Red Triangle.  Why here?  Uncover this mysterious intersection of man and apex predator when survivors and scientists take us into SHARK BATTLEGROUND: THE RED TRIANGLE – Saturday, June 9th at 9PM (EST/PST) on NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL.

Each year, throughout the world, there are roughly 30 to 50 recorded Great White Shark attacks.  Almost half occurred in the Red Triangle.  With a bite pressure approaching 3 tons and a jaw filled with 3,000 serrated teeth, the results of these attacks mean at best injury, at worst death.  What's behind this staggering statistic?  We meet victims who have come face-to-face with Great White Sharks.  Survivors like Megan Halavais, a young surfer who nearly lost her leg.  Or Marco Flagg, a dive equipment engineer almost split in half from a bite to his torso.  They find themselves off the California coast for work and play only to face danger and possible death.

But their stories of survival give scientists clues to shark behavior and migratory patterns.  Are Great Whites mistakenly targeting humans instead of their pinniped prey?  Or are they looking for a new source of nourishment?  Do they see humans as a territorial threat? When and where are attacks mostly likely to occur?  And why is there such a high concentration of Great Whites off the California coast? Explore the size, strength, and behavior of this force of the sea through the victims, survivors and researchers in the thick of SHARK BATTLEGROUND: THE RED TRIANGLE.

SHARK BATTLEGROUND is produced for National Geographic Channel, US by Hoff productions, Inc in association with Electric Sky.
